FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQ

What are the differences between an internship, an apprenticeship and a job?

An apprenticeship program combines employment, education, and union membership benefits. Typically lasting around 1 to 5 years, apprenticeships usually require a specific number of hours on-the-job and in the classroom, and pay according to a scale set forth in the program standards. Internships, on the other hand, tend to be more short-term than apprenticeships, and can be both paid or unpaid. Similarly to apprenticeships however, internships still provide hands-on exposure and structured skill development. Many internships are tied to college credit for students, while apprenticeships offer an alternative education pathway to learn a trade. A job differs from both, revolving less around formal training and instead focusing on specific tasks. Each option serves a unique purpose, so it is important to choose the option that best suits you and your goals at this stage in your career path.

Individual apprenticeship committees accept applications for their own programs. Apprenticeship programs are typically available to those 18 or over with a high school diploma. The Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions (SNBTU) has curated a guide to assist apprenticeship exploration. Why should I explore a career pathway instead of just find a job?

We have found that exploring a career pathway will set you up for long-term success by providing a clear vision of your outstanding goals and the steps in which to achieve them. While a job may meet your immediate needs, a well thought out career pathway provides greater advantages in the longrun–offering abundant opportunities for personal growth and skill development.
