Additionally, it is standard to take courses at a vocational-technical school that focus on pipe system design, safety, tool use, and welding. A 4 to 5 year apprenticeship role is also typically required, as it allows workers to gain the necessary skills needed to pass their licensing exam. Once they have passed their exam, they are able to become a journey-level worker, which makes them qualified to perform tasks independently.
