Licensed Practical & Licensed Vocational Nurses

Introduction

Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses provide basic medical care under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. Their duties may vary depending on the state they are employed in, but typically include monitoring patients’ health, providing basic patient care and comfort, discussing and listening to patient concerns, and documenting and maintaining patient health records.

Career Requirements

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses must complete a 1 year state-approved educational program, during which they will learn about nursing fundamentals, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and supervised clinical experience. After completing the program, Licensed Practical Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses must also pass the National Council Licensure Examination in order to be qualified for the role.

The College of Southern Nevada has a Practical Nursing Program, which is approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
